Columbia Sportswear Receives Skin Cancer Seal of Recommendation
Sunscreen is good, but it is not good enough. Although sunscreens can protect us from the harmful effects of the sun, they do not do so on what I call a full-time basis. Once you sweat or have your sunscreen-protected body wet in the water, the effectiveness of the sunscreen diminishes – even if your sunscreens say they are waterproof. This is according to Dra. Krisinda Dim-Jamora of Ths Skin Cancer Foundation Inc. of The Medical City.
Also, according to the medical journal The Lancet, while sunscreen is proven effective against two of the three most common skin cancers (basal carcinomas and squamous cell carcinoma); it has not been conclusively shown to protect against Melanoma. Melanoma is considered as the most fatal form of skin cancer, being responsible for 75% of its deaths. The same study suggests that clothing may be your best line of defense against the sun.
Columbia Sportswear, a global leader in the active outdoor apparel and footwear industries, is the first global company to receive The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation for their sun protective apparel called the Omni-Shade line. The Seal of Recommendation is awarded to safe and effective sun-protective clothing with a minimum Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) 30.
The Skin Cancer Foundation is the first organization in the United States to commit itself to educating the public and medical professionals about sun safety. It is also the only global organization solely devoted to the prevention, detection and treatment of skin cancer. Applications for the seal of recommendation are reviewed by the Skin Cancer Foundation’s photobiology committee, which is composed of five leading dermatologists from major medical centers in the United States.
By providing built-in sun protection, Columbia Sportswear’s Omni-Shade line extends the brand’s existing apparel offerings to achieve year-round protection from the elements. Columbia’s Omni-Shade apparel includes more than 100 UPF rated products for men, women and children that ensure protection against damaging UVA and UVB ultraviolet (UV) rays. Many Omni-Shade products are also pre-treated with UV inhibiting ingredients. Omni-Shade offers protection ranging from UPF 15 to UPF 50.
Founded in 1938 in Portland, Oregon, Columbia Sportswear Company is a global leader in the design, sourcing, marketing and distribution of active outdoor apparel and footwear. As one of the largest outerwear brands in the world, the Company has developed an international reputation for quality, performance and value.

Me at the Project Runway Philippines Finale
I was so excited for the Final Runway Show of Project Runway Philippines that the first thing I thought of when I received my invites was: “I don’t have anything to wear!”
It is pretty normal for me to purchase a new set of clothes just for an event wherein I know that I will be photographed (feelingera!) and that I will be rubbing elbows with important people. Sometimes though, when I’m super short on cash, I just manage to whip up something from my closet and mix and match and sew and paint and whatever I can think of just to make the outfit look brand new. There’s nothing wrong with wearing old stuff. But there is something wrong with getting photographed on two different occasions wearing the SAME outfit.
So anyway, early in the afternoon prior to the runway show, I headed to SM Makati to shop. I knew I didn’t have enough money to buy me super nice things over at Greenbelt 5 so I decided to shop at SM Department Store. SM Department Stores, trust me, have everything you need! And what’s good about it is that you can buy non-signature items which look like signature items, at more than half the price.
So the photo above has the results of my thrift shopping experience. Except for the knitted maroon pullover vest and the white Wade shoes which I bought early in October, everything is brand new!
Here’s the rundown: Read more
